Who is a Candidate?

People with a double chin who are otherwise slim are great candidates for chin liposuction. Chin fat is often resistant to diet and exercise which can be incredibly frustrating. The best candidates also have good skin laxity with minimal sagging neck skin; this ensures good results that last.

The Procedure

First, your chin and the surrounding area will be numbed using a local anesthetic. This is different than general anesthesia, which puts you to sleep. After the area is numbed, small incisions will be made under the chin and the cannula, attached to a vacuum-like device, will be inserted under the skin. The cannula will be moved back and forth through the fat layer under your skin to break up and suck out the fat while contouring your neck and jawline. The entire procedure takes one hour or less.

Results and Recovery

Bruising and swelling after liposuction are common, so you will need to take 3-5days  off work. You will also have to wear a chin strap for about 2 weeks after the procedure to prevent fluid buildup and reduce swelling. This chin strap keeps the skin taut and helps with the healing process. You should also avoid strenuous activity and exercise for at least 10 days after chin liposuction since this can open up your incisions or create more swelling.

Although you will see some differences after the procedure, it can take 3-6 months for swelling to completely go down. This is when the final results can be seen. If you maintain a consistent weight, results from chin liposuction should last up to 10 years. Additional procedures, such as a neck lift or non-surgical treatment, may be needed if your skin does not have enough elasticity and remains loose after the procedure.
