Types of Breast Implantsin Portland, Oregon
Quick Links ‹
Breast implants are one of the most popular plastic surgery options available today. With a breast implant procedure, you can enhance the size and shape of your breasts and finally achieve the beautiful curves you desire. Breast surgery can also be combined with other procedures, like a breast lift or a tummy tuck, for a full rejuvenation.
Types of Implants for Breast Augmentation
At Hetal Fichadia, MD, FACS, we offer a few different breast implant options. Which one is right for you depends on the results you’re looking for, your anatomy, and Dr. Fichadia’s recommendations.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are approved by the Food and Drug Administration and filled with sterile salt water, providing a uniform shape, firmness, and feel. They have a silicone shell and can help increase the size and shape of the breasts.
If the saline-filled implants leak, the body naturally absorbs the saline with no adverse reactions beyond the deflation of the implant. These implants come in a variety of different sizes, and they can be pre-filled or filled during the breast implant surgery.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone implants are FDA-approved and filled with silicone gel and often feel more like natural breast tissue. The silicone gel in the implants is in a smooth or round silicone outer shell. The implants can vary in shape, profile, volume, and the thickness of the shell.
Unlike saline implants, if a silicone implant leaks, it will need to be addressed relatively quickly as the body will not absorb it. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel will not collapse.
Gummy Bear Implants
Form-stable implants are sometimes referred to as gummy bear breast implants because they can maintain their shape even when the implant shell is broken. The silicone gel is thicker than traditional silicone gel implants and is much firmer, but it still feels like natural breast tissue.
These types of implants offer more projection at the bottom of the implant and taper off toward the top for a more natural appearance.
Fat Transfer
Looking for more subtle results? Fat transfer breast augmentation is likely the perfect solution. By using liposuction, we’ll take unwanted fat from one area of the body, purify it, and then inject it into the breast to enhance the breast size and shape for more natural results. The fat can be taken from the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, or back.
It’s perfect for those who worry about breast implant complications like allergic reactions, breast implant illness, capsular contracture (scar tissue), or leaks or breast implant rupture. Capsular contracture can come with breast pain, infection, and changes in the sensation of the breast.
There is also no need for breast implant removal or revision surgery with this method.
Types of Silicone Shell Breast Augmentation Implants
Beyond types of implants and breast surgery procedures like fat transfer, there are also different silicone shell options. Some of the options we use at our Portland, OR office, while others aren’t safe enough for our patients.
Round Breast Implants
Round breast implants are the same shape all the way around and make the breasts appear fuller, especially at the top of the breast. Since they are round, there is less of a worry about the implant rotating. They are filled with saline or softer silicone and come in a variety of different profiles to determine how much they project from the chest.
Smooth Breast Implants
Smooth breast implants are the softest and most natural feeling with breast augmentation surgery. They can move within the breast implant pocket, which gives a more natural appearance. The issue with smooth implants is that there can be rippling under the skin.
There are also textured breast implants and teardrop-shaped implants, but Dr. Fichadia does not use those as they increase the risk of breast cancer bia-alcl.
